A page from Utagawa Hiroshige's 1848 instructional manual, featuring botanical studies of pheasant's eye and peach blossoms with traditional calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the instructional manual 'Ehon tebikigusa', published in 1848. Utagawa Hiroshige, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, designed this volume to guide students in the techniques of drawing natural subjects. The composition is divided into distinct sections, demonstrating the methodical approach required to capture botanical forms.
On the left page, the artist presents studies of the Adonis amurensis, or pheasant's eye, shown in various stages of development. The upper section displays the plant in its natural state, while the lower section provides a simplified, almost abstract breakdown of the flower's structure. This pedagogical layout allows the student to observe how complex organic shapes are reduced to basic brush strokes. The colour palette here is restrained, utilising soft greens and yellows against a pale background.
The right page features a delicate branch of peach blossoms, rendered with a focus on the elegant curve of the stem and the soft texture of the petals. Beside the illustration, calligraphic text provides instruction, blending the visual with the literary. The blue background on this page creates a subtle contrast, allowing the pink hues of the blossoms to emerge clearly. Hiroshige employs a calligraphic line quality throughout, reflecting the fluid motion of the brush that he intended his students to emulate.
As a functional object, this print offers a glimpse into the educational practices of the Edo period. It is not merely a decorative image but a tool for artistic development. The work demonstrates the precision and economy of line that defined Hiroshige's broader output, showing his ability to distil the essence of nature into a clear, reproducible format. This museum-grade print captures the original paper texture and the specific ink application of the 19th-century woodblock process.
