Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and the United States, formed the basis of some of the most influential art education programmes of the 20th century. Albers is perhaps best known for his abstract paintings and colour theory. He taught at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and Yale University. His work explored the relationships between colours and geometric forms. 'Piano Keys' exemplifies Albers's interest in geometric abstraction and the interplay of positive and negative space. The composition features two representations of piano keys. The upper keyboard is rendered in solid black and white, while the lower one is depicted as a linear framework, creating a sense of depth and transparency. The stark contrast between the black, white, and grey enhances the geometric forms, resulting in a visually striking and intellectually engaging piece.
