A fine Neoclassical engraving by Raphael Morghen depicting the personification of Philosophy, featuring balanced composition and precise line work.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the personification of Philosophy, a subject derived from the decorative schemes found within the Vatican. The central female figure sits with composure, holding a volume inscribed with the word 'Moralis'. She is flanked by two herms, which serve as structural supports for the composition. Two putti stand on either side, each lifting a tablet inscribed with the Latin terms 'Causa' and 'Cognitio', representing the pursuit of knowledge and the understanding of causes. The circular framing device provides a sense of containment, typical of reproductive prints intended to capture the essence of larger mural works.
Morghen was a master of the burin, known for his technical precision and ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of engraving. His work often focused on reproducing the compositions of the Italian Renaissance masters, particularly Raphael. This print demonstrates his command of line and shadow, creating a sense of volume in the drapery and the anatomical forms of the figures. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, reflecting the orderly ideals of the Neoclassical period. The use of stippling and cross-hatching allows for subtle transitions in light, giving the image a sculptural quality that mimics the appearance of stone or plaster reliefs.
As a reproductive engraver, Morghen played a role in the dissemination of classical art across Europe. His prints were collected by connoisseurs who sought to study the compositions of the great masters in their own libraries. This specific work captures the intellectual rigour associated with the Enlightenment era, where the personification of abstract concepts was a common method for visualising complex philosophical ideas. The clarity of the engraving ensures that every detail, from the expressions of the putti to the texture of the book, remains legible and precise.
