A refined 1630 portrait by Anthony van Dyck, depicting the diplomat Philippe Le Roy in a classic Baroque style.
Painted in 1630, this portrait of Philippe Le Roy captures the subject in a manner typical of Anthony van Dyck's mature style. Le Roy, a wealthy merchant and diplomat from Brussels, is depicted standing in a relaxed yet authoritative pose. He wears a dark, sombre costume, which serves to focus the viewer's attention on his facial expression and the refined details of his lace collar and cuffs. The inclusion of a greyhound at his side adds a sense of aristocratic leisure, a common motif in seventeenth-century portraiture to signify the status and character of the sitter.
Van Dyck employs a restrained palette dominated by deep blacks, browns, and muted earth tones. The lighting is carefully managed to model the figure, creating a sense of volume against the darker background. The brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the animal's coat, demonstrating the artist's technical facility. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned slightly off-centre, allowing for a glimpse of a landscape element on the right side of the frame. This work remains a fine example of the artist's ability to convey both the social standing and the individual personality of his patrons during his time in the Southern Netherlands.
This museum-grade print reproduces the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting. It is suitable for those who appreciate the technical precision of the Baroque period and the specific aesthetic of Flemish portraiture. The print captures the depth of the shadows and the fine textures of the clothing, ensuring the quality of the original is maintained in a smaller format.
