A detailed 1649 engraving by Cornelis Visscher portraying the Dutch scholar Petrus Scriverius, captured with technical precision and classical framing.
This engraving by Cornelis Visscher depicts the Dutch scholar and poet Petrus Scriverius. Produced in 1649, the work captures the subject in his later years, as indicated by the Latin inscription 'AETATIS SVA LXXIIII' (at the age of 74). Visscher, a master of the burin, employs a precise technique to render the textures of the subject's fur-trimmed cloak, the crisp linen of his collar, and the weathered features of his face. The portrait is framed by a classical architectural border, a common convention in seventeenth-century printmaking that lends a sense of formal authority to the sitter.
Scriverius is shown with his hand resting upon an open book, a gesture that identifies him as a man of letters. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing on the intellectual character of the subject rather than decorative excess. Below the portrait, a lengthy Latin text provides biographical context and praise for the scholar, reflecting the period's custom of combining visual portraiture with written eulogy. The print was published by Pieter Soutman in Haarlem, a centre for print production during the Dutch Golden Age.
Visscher's ability to manipulate light and shadow through varied line work creates a sense of volume and presence. The cross-hatching on the cloak provides a deep, dark contrast to the lighter tones of the face and hands, drawing the viewer's eye to the subject's steady gaze. This piece offers a clear example of the technical proficiency achieved by Dutch engravers during the mid-seventeenth century, where the medium was used to document the figures who shaped the intellectual climate of the era. The work remains a primary source for the appearance of Scriverius and a fine example of Visscher's contribution to the genre of portrait engraving.
