A double portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby, depicting Peter Perez Burdett and his first wife, Hannah, in an outdoor setting. The painting reflects the conventions of 18th-century British portraiture, blending elements of formality with a sense of naturalism.
This double portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby depicts Peter Perez Burdett (1734/35-1815) and his first wife, Hannah, in an outdoor setting. Burdett was a surveyor, cartographer, and artist, known for his innovative surveying techniques and later, for his controversial departure from England due to debt and accusations of bigamy. Wright's portrait captures Burdett seated casually on a brick wall, holding a rifle, while Hannah stands beside him, elegantly dressed and holding flowers. The background features a softly rendered, atmospheric sky and foliage, typical of Wright's style. The painting reflects the conventions of 18th-century British portraiture, blending elements of formality with a sense of naturalism. Wright was a master of light and shadow, and this skill is evident in the way he models the figures and creates depth in the composition. The portrait offers insight into the social status and personal lives of the sitters, as well as Wright's artistic talent. The work is a fine example of British portraiture during the Enlightenment era, capturing the spirit of intellectual curiosity and social change that characterised the period.
