A precise graphite drawing by Joseph von Führich depicting the biblical scene of Saint Peter's denial of Christ, executed in the linear style of the Nazarene movement.
This drawing by Joseph von Führich depicts the biblical narrative of Saint Peter denying Christ. As a member of the Nazarene movement, Führich focused on clarity of line and a return to the aesthetic principles of the early Renaissance. The composition is divided into distinct zones, separating the central figure of Christ, who is being led away by soldiers, from the foreground figures gathered around a fire. To the right, the figure of Peter is shown in a moment of withdrawal, his posture conveying his internal conflict and shame. A small cockerel is positioned above him, serving as a symbolic reference to the prophecy of his denial.
Führich employs a precise, linear style that prioritises draughtsmanship over tonal modelling. The architectural setting, defined by classical columns and arches, provides a structured environment for the figures. The artist uses thin, controlled lines to delineate the forms, creating a sense of order and restraint. This approach is characteristic of the Nazarene interest in moralising subject matter and historical accuracy in costume and setting. The work functions as a study of human emotion within a formalised narrative framework, avoiding excessive drama in favour of a measured, contemplative presentation of the scene. The aged paper tone adds a sense of history to the work, allowing the graphite lines to remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention. This piece reflects the artist's dedication to religious themes and his technical proficiency in classical drawing methods.
