A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting a Persian nobleman and horseman, framed by decorative botanical borders.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two figures identified as a Persian nobleman and a horseman. Produced during the late sixteenth century, the work reflects the European fascination with foreign cultures and exotic costume during the Renaissance period. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, contributed significantly to the dissemination of ethnographic and fashion imagery through his printed series.
The composition features two distinct panels, each framed by a decorative border containing botanical and avian motifs. The left panel shows a nobleman mounted on a horse, wearing elaborate armour and a tall headdress. The right panel displays a horseman in similar attire, though the print itself shows signs of historical wear and paper loss. The figures are rendered with precise, thin lines characteristic of the engraving techniques of the era, focusing on the texture of the garments and the posture of the subjects. The inclusion of Latin and German inscriptions provides context for the viewer, categorising the figures by their perceived social status and origin.
This print is part of a broader tradition of costume books, which served as visual encyclopaedias for contemporary audiences. These works allowed individuals to study the appearance of people from distant lands without leaving their homes. The attention to detail in the armour and the decorative borders demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving. As a historical document, the piece offers insight into how sixteenth-century European artists interpreted and documented global diversity. The print remains a record of the period's interest in the wider world, captured through the medium of black and white line work.
