A striking woodcut by Dutch artist Johannes Josephus Aarts, depicting the mythological figures of Perseus and Minerva through bold, high-contrast lines.
This woodcut by the Dutch artist Johannes Josephus Aarts depicts the classical myth of Perseus and Minerva. Aarts, a significant figure in the early twentieth-century Dutch art scene, was known for his technical mastery of graphic arts, particularly lithography and woodcutting. His work often explored themes from mythology and literature, rendered with a distinct graphic sensibility that prioritises bold contrasts and rhythmic line work.
In this composition, the figures of Perseus and Minerva are presented in a stylised, almost sculptural manner. The artist employs a high-contrast approach, using deep black ink against the lighter tone of the paper to define the forms. Perseus is shown with a sword, his posture dynamic and athletic, while Minerva appears alongside him, holding a mirror or shield. The background and lower sections of the print feature geometric and decorative patterns, which serve to flatten the pictorial space and unify the composition. This approach is characteristic of the period, where artists moved away from strict realism in favour of expressive, graphic clarity.
Aarts was a professor at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and his influence on the development of Dutch graphic design is well-documented. His prints often demonstrate a balance between classical subject matter and modern stylistic interpretation. The sharp edges and angular forms in this piece suggest the influence of Art Nouveau and early Expressionist movements, which were gaining momentum in Europe at the time. The work is a clear example of the artist's ability to distil complex narrative scenes into a singular, powerful visual statement, relying on the inherent properties of the woodcut medium to create a sense of drama and movement.
