A detailed 1542 engraving by Sebald Beham depicting a peasant in winter, featuring the inscription 'Es ist kalt weter'.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1542, belongs to a series depicting the seasons or weather conditions through the lives of rural labourers. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced small-scale prints that demonstrate technical precision and a keen observation of daily life in sixteenth-century Germany.
The composition features a solitary figure viewed from behind, dressed in heavy winter attire. The peasant carries a pitchfork over his shoulder, his posture suggesting the physical toll of agricultural labour. A prominent scroll unfurls above his head, bearing the German inscription ES IST KALT WETER, which translates to 'It is cold weather'. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the clothing, the rough bark of the nearby tree stump, and the sparse vegetation at the peasant's feet. The monogram ISB is visible on the right side, a signature characteristic of Beham's work.
Unlike the grand religious or mythological subjects common to the period, this print focuses on the mundane reality of the working class. The starkness of the scene, combined with the directness of the text, provides a clear narrative. The background is minimal, keeping the focus on the figure and his immediate environment. This work reflects the interest of the Northern Renaissance in documenting the social strata of the time, moving away from idealised forms to capture the specificities of human experience. The print is an example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by German engravers during this era, where every mark serves to build form and atmosphere within a compact frame.
