A detailed etching by Johann Georg Hertel (II) depicting a lively peasant scene outside a rural inn, inspired by the style of David Teniers the Younger.
This etching by Johann Georg Hertel (II) captures a lively social scene set outside a rural inn. The composition draws heavily from the tradition of Dutch and Flemish genre painting, specifically referencing the works of David Teniers the Younger. Hertel, an engraver and publisher based in Augsburg, was known for his technical precision in reproducing the rustic charm and narrative detail characteristic of the seventeenth-century masters.
The scene depicts a group of villagers gathered near a modest building. In the foreground, a couple dances with lighthearted energy, while others sit on benches or stand in conversation near the entrance. A small dog trots across the dirt path, adding a sense of movement to the quiet rural setting. To the left, the composition opens up to reveal a distant church tower and a calm body of water, providing a sense of depth and atmosphere. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the thatched roof, the rough clothing of the peasants, and the foliage of the surrounding trees.
Hertel's work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in collecting and disseminating prints of earlier genre scenes. By translating the painterly qualities of Teniers into the medium of etching, he allowed a wider audience to appreciate the humorous and observational nature of these everyday subjects. The print is marked with the name of the original painter, D. Teniers, and the engraver, Ioh. Georg Hertel, at the bottom of the plate. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the period, where the reproduction of established masters was a standard method for refining technique and expanding the reach of European art history.
