A 1879 genre painting by Konstantin Makovsky depicting two Russian peasant children resting in a garden setting.
Konstantin Makovsky, a member of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), produced this work in 1879. The painting captures a quiet moment in the Russian countryside, focusing on two children seated upon a fallen log. The girl, wearing a traditional headscarf and a simple blue dress, gazes directly at the viewer with a composed expression. Beside her, a young boy with fair, tousled hair rests his hand near his chin, holding a small basket.
The composition is set against a backdrop of soft, dappled greenery and tall hollyhocks, which provide a natural frame for the figures. Makovsky employs a painterly technique, using visible brushstrokes to define the textures of the children's rustic clothing and the surrounding foliage. The light filters through the trees, creating a gentle atmosphere that avoids excessive sentimentality.
This piece reflects the broader interest in rural life that occupied many Russian artists during the late nineteenth century. Rather than focusing on grand historical narratives, Makovsky turns his attention to the everyday existence of the peasantry. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency in portraiture and his ability to render human character with sensitivity. The palette remains grounded in natural earth tones, greens, and soft blues, which harmonise with the outdoor setting. The children appear as individuals, their presence grounded in the physical reality of the forest edge. This print captures the specific light and texture of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's handling of form and colour.
