A fine art print of a Ming Dynasty hanging scroll by Lü Ji, depicting peacocks, a pine tree, and peonies.
Lü Ji was a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He is recognised for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre, a tradition that combined precise observation with symbolic meaning. This work displays the technical control expected of a painter working within the imperial academy.
The composition features two peacocks positioned beneath the boughs of a pine tree. The pine is a traditional symbol of longevity and resilience in Chinese art. The inclusion of peonies, often associated with prosperity and nobility, adds a layer of seasonal and auspicious meaning to the scene. The artist employs a combination of fine brushwork for the feathers and more fluid, expressive strokes for the tree bark and foliage.
The colour palette is muted, relying on earth tones, soft greens, and the subtle pinks and whites of the peony blossoms. This restraint allows the viewer to focus on the textures of the plumage and the gnarled form of the pine. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden hue, which unifies the composition and provides a soft background for the subjects. Lü Ji often utilised this style of hanging scroll format to create a sense of verticality and balance. The arrangement of the birds, one standing and one perched, creates a dynamic interaction that guides the eye across the surface of the painting. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the Ming court, where nature was depicted with both decorative intent and symbolic weight.
