A late-career masterpiece by Chang Dai-chien, this work blends traditional ink techniques with abstract colour washes to depict a serene, mythical valley.
Peach Blossom Spring, created in 1982, represents the final period of Chang Dai-chien's career. During his later years, the artist moved away from traditional brushwork techniques, adopting a style that combined traditional Chinese ink painting with Western abstract expressionist influences. This work demonstrates his mastery of the splashed ink and colour technique, where mineral pigments are applied to wet paper to create fluid, atmospheric effects. The composition depicts a secluded, idyllic realm, a recurring theme in Chinese literature and art. The upper portion of the scroll is dominated by dark, saturated washes of ink and mineral blue, suggesting towering, mist-shrouded mountains. Below, the scene transitions into lighter, more delicate tones, where pink blossoms emerge from the base of the cliffs. A small boat rests on the water, providing a sense of scale and inviting the viewer into the narrative of the hidden valley. Chang Dai-chien's application of colour is deliberate. He uses azurite and malachite pigments to create depth, contrasting these heavy, opaque minerals with the transparency of the ink washes. The calligraphy on the right side of the work provides a textual counterpoint to the visual abstraction, grounding the piece in the tradition of the literati painter. The work is a synthesis of his lifelong study of classical masters and his experiences living abroad in Brazil, California, and Taiwan. It captures the tension between the representational requirements of the subject matter and the freedom of abstract form. The result is a work that feels both ancient in its thematic roots and modern in its execution, offering a quiet, contemplative experience for the viewer.
