A modernist work by William H. Johnson featuring two figures in a simplified, expressive style, characterised by bold outlines and flat colour fields.
William H. Johnson painted Peace during his later career, a period marked by a shift toward a simplified, folk-inspired aesthetic. This work depicts two women seated on a striped blanket in an open field. The composition relies on bold, flat areas of colour and heavy black outlines, which define the figures against the simplified background. The artist employs a deliberate lack of perspective, creating a flattened pictorial space that draws attention to the shapes and forms of the subjects.
Johnson, who spent significant time in Europe before returning to the United States, synthesised various modernist influences into a distinct visual language. His work from the 1940s often explores themes of community, domesticity, and social harmony. In this piece, the interaction between the two women, one reading a letter while the other observes, suggests a quiet moment of connection. The inclusion of stylised white clouds and small floral motifs adds to the decorative quality of the scene. The palette is direct, utilising primary and secondary colours to create a sense of balance and clarity. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Johnson focuses on the essential humanity of his subjects, presenting them with a sense of dignity and calm. This approach reflects his interest in the expressive power of simplified forms, a technique he refined throughout his career to communicate universal themes through personal and cultural narratives.
