A delicate charcoal study by Matthijs Maris, capturing two figures in a dreamlike, atmospheric haze.
Matthijs Maris, a member of the influential Maris brothers, moved away from the realistic depictions of the Hague School towards a personal, dreamlike aesthetic. This charcoal study, titled Peace, genaamd Koningskinderen, captures the ethereal quality that defined his later career. The composition features two figures emerging from a hazy, atmospheric background, their forms softened by the delicate application of charcoal. Maris often revisited the theme of the 'Koningskinderen' (King's Children), a subject drawn from folklore and fairy tales that allowed him to explore melancholy and romantic longing.
The technique employed here relies on the subtle gradation of tone rather than defined outlines. By blurring the edges of the figures, Maris creates a sense of distance and mystery, as if the subjects exist in a realm between memory and reality. The lack of sharp detail forces the viewer to focus on the mood and the gentle interaction between the figures. This approach reflects the artist's withdrawal from the public eye and his preference for internalised, poetic subjects over the objective observation of nature.
Maris spent much of his life in London, where his work became increasingly abstract and elusive. This drawing demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, using the texture of the paper to suggest a veil of mist or time. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that avoids narrative clarity in favour of emotional resonance. The work serves as a window into the artist's private world, where the boundaries of form dissolve into a soft, monochromatic haze. Collectors of Symbolist art will appreciate the technical restraint and the haunting, otherworldly atmosphere present in this study.
