A classical allegorical study of Pax, the personification of peace, rendered in pen and ink by the German Renaissance master Heinrich Aldegrever.
This work by Heinrich Aldegrever depicts the personification of Pax, or Peace, a common allegorical subject in sixteenth-century Northern European art. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was highly skilled in the production of small-scale engravings and drawings. His work often reflects the influence of Dürer and the Italian Renaissance, particularly in the handling of the human form and the use of classical iconography.
The figure of Pax is shown in a contrapposto stance, draped in flowing garments that reveal the artist's interest in classical drapery studies. She holds a cornucopia, a traditional symbol of abundance and prosperity, which reinforces the association between peace and societal well-being. In her other hand, she carries a palm branch, another conventional attribute of peace. The background is minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the figure and her symbolic objects. The drawing exhibits the precise, controlled line work characteristic of Aldegrever's graphic output. The application of wash provides subtle modelling to the figure, creating a sense of volume and weight within the composition.
Aldegrever was based in Soest and his output was prolific, spanning religious, mythological, and secular themes. This drawing demonstrates his ability to translate complex allegorical concepts into clear, readable visual language. The use of ink and wash suggests this may have been a preparatory study for a print or a finished work intended for a collector's cabinet. The clarity of the figure and the deliberate placement of the attributes demonstrate the artist's methodical approach to composition. This piece offers a view into the intellectual climate of the mid-sixteenth century, where classical motifs were frequently employed to convey moral and political ideals.
