A woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series, depicting a rainy evening at the Akasaka paulownia garden with figures in traditional rain gear.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print in 1856 as part of his series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The scene depicts the paulownia plantation at Akasaka during a summer rainstorm. This location was situated near the Tameike Pond in the western part of the city. The red vertical cartouche in the upper right contains the series title, while the square cartouche next to it identifies the specific view. The red cartouche on the left side contains the artist's signature, Hiroshige ga. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands. In the lower section, several figures traverse a grey path. Two men wear red garments while another carries a shoulder pole with baskets. A figure in a straw raincoat and hat walks further ahead. To the left, a yellow bamboo fence borders a small building. These details provide a glimpse into the daily life and movement within the city during the Edo period. The middle ground contains rows of young paulownia trees with purple blossoms. These trees were cultivated for their light, fire-resistant wood, which was often used to construct furniture and dowry chests. Beyond the trees, the Tameike Pond appears as a pale blue strip. The background shows a dense forest of darker trees partially obscured by the weather. Hiroshige used vertical grey lines to represent falling rain. This technique creates a sense of movement and atmosphere. The sky employs a grey gradation that darkens towards the top of the frame. This effect is achieved through the bokashi printing process, where ink is hand-applied to the woodblock to create soft transitions. The woodblock process required multiple carved blocks, one for each colour. The alignment had to be precise to ensure the rain lines did not overlap the figures or trees incorrectly. The colour palette consists of muted greens and grey tones, contrasted by the red of the figures.
