A stark 1832 political lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, published in 'La Caricature' to warn against the suppression of political dissent.
This lithograph, titled 'Patriots of All Nations, Watch Yourselves!!', was published in the French satirical journal 'La Caricature' in 1832. Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a draughtsman known for his military subjects and social commentary, produced this work during a period of intense political instability in post-revolutionary France. The image depicts two men suspended from a gallows, their bodies rendered with a stark, sombre realism that contrasts with the distant, ghostly procession of clergy visible in the background.
The composition employs a vertical orientation to emphasise the grim reality of the execution. Raffet uses fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the wooden structure and the slumped forms of the figures. The background, featuring a religious procession, provides a chilling juxtaposition between institutional authority and the fate of the individuals. The title, inscribed at the base, serves as a direct warning to political activists and those challenging the status quo of the era.
As a piece of nineteenth-century political satire, the work reflects the anxieties surrounding the July Monarchy and the suppression of dissent. Raffet avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the gravity of the subject matter. The print captures the tension between the state and the individual, a common theme in the lithographic output of the period. The muted tones and precise linework are characteristic of the medium, which allowed for the rapid dissemination of such provocative imagery to a wider public audience. This print remains a historical document of the social climate in 1830s Paris, offering a glimpse into the visual language of protest and the risks faced by those who opposed the prevailing political order.
