A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting women relaxing on a pleasure boat during the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a scene of leisure aboard the pleasure boat Kawaichimaru. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre, bringing a refined sensibility to his depictions of the floating world. His work is known for its elongated figures and a sense of poise that distinguishes his style from the more robust portrayals of his contemporaries.
The composition focuses on three women gathered within the sheltered cabin of the boat. The central figure holds a pipe, her posture relaxed yet composed, while her companions engage in quiet conversation and handle a fan. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, relying on soft tones to convey the atmosphere of a calm outing on the water. The architectural elements of the boat, including the overhead canopy and the open sides, frame the subjects, creating a sense of intimacy and enclosure.
Eishi was particularly noted for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. His approach often involved a subtle grace, avoiding the exaggerated features found in other schools of the period. The print demonstrates his mastery of line and balance, with the patterns on the kimonos providing a decorative element that does not overwhelm the figures. The water below is suggested through simple, rhythmic lines, grounding the scene in its aquatic setting. This piece offers a glimpse into the social customs of the Edo period, where pleasure boats served as venues for entertainment and social interaction among the urban elite. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in late eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking, prioritising elegance and a measured, harmonious arrangement of forms.
