A classic mitate-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, featuring a playful parody of the arhat Handaka Sonja set against a rainy backdrop.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the genre of mitate-e, or parody prints, which were popular during the Edo period. Harunobu frequently reinterpreted classical themes, religious figures, or historical narratives by placing contemporary figures into these established roles. In this composition, the artist replaces the traditional figure of the arhat Handaka Sonja, often depicted summoning a dragon from a bowl, with a young girl. The girl is carried on the back of a man, who is dressed in the robes of a Daoist immortal. The scene is set against a backdrop of rain, indicated by fine diagonal lines, which adds a sense of atmosphere to the interaction between the two figures.
Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. This print demonstrates his mastery of the technique, utilising a refined palette to distinguish the patterns on the garments and the texture of the umbrella. The composition is balanced, with the figures occupying the centre of the frame, while the rain provides a sense of movement. The work reflects the playful and sophisticated culture of the urban population in Edo, who enjoyed the intellectual exercise of identifying the original source material behind these visual puns. By subverting the gravity of the original religious subject, Harunobu creates a lighthearted narrative that prioritises aesthetic charm and wit. The delicate line work and the careful application of colour are characteristic of his output during the late 1760s, a period when his influence on the development of the woodblock medium was at its height.
