A colour lithograph by Henri Rivière depicting the outskirts of Paris, capturing the atmospheric, rainy conditions of the city's fortifications at the turn of the century.
Henri Rivière, a figure associated with the Chat Noir cabaret and the development of the shadow theatre, produced this work as part of his series, Les Paysages parisiens. This collection captures the outskirts of Paris at the turn of the twentieth century, focusing on the peripheral zones where the urban environment met the open countryside. The composition reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the work of Hokusai and Hiroshige, which were widely collected by French artists during this period.
The scene depicts the fortifications that once encircled Paris, a space often occupied by makeshift dwellings and informal gardens. Rivière employs a muted palette of greys, browns, and soft greens to convey the damp, atmospheric conditions of a rainy day. A lone figure walks along a wet road, umbrella in hand, while the distant silhouette of the city rises against a heavy, overcast sky. The use of flat colour planes and simplified forms creates a sense of quiet observation, avoiding the dramatic flair often found in contemporary academic painting. The bare trees and puddles on the ground provide a sense of seasonal transition, grounding the image in a specific, observable reality.
Rivière was a master of the lithographic process, and his ability to translate the subtle gradations of watercolour into print is evident here. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a balanced arrangement of shapes and lines that guide the viewer across the composition. By documenting these transitional spaces, Rivière provides a record of a Paris that was rapidly disappearing under the pressure of urban expansion. This print offers a view into the quieter, less celebrated corners of the city, rendered with technical precision and a restrained aesthetic sensibility.
