A detailed Neoclassical engraving by Jean François Ribault depicting the mythological figures of Paris and Oenone in a pastoral setting.
This engraving depicts the mythological figures Paris and Oenone, a subject drawn from classical literature. Paris, the Trojan prince, is shown in a pastoral setting with the nymph Oenone, his first wife. The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century printmaking, utilising precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the surrounding foliage.
Jean François Ribault, a French engraver active during the transition into the nineteenth century, demonstrates a high level of technical control in this work. The scene is constructed with a focus on anatomical accuracy and balanced proportions, reflecting the broader Neoclassical interest in Greco-Roman themes. To the right, a river god figure pours water from an urn, a common iconographic element used to ground the scene within a natural, mythological context. The lighting is managed through varying densities of cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth across the figures and the rocky terrain.
The print captures a moment of quiet interaction between the two protagonists. Paris holds a flute, suggesting his role as a shepherd on Mount Ida, while Oenone reclines beside him. The background is dense with trees and shadows, providing a contrast to the illuminated forms of the central figures. This work is representative of the period's preference for academic subjects rendered with clarity and formal rigour. The print serves as a fine example of the reproductive engraving techniques that allowed classical narratives to reach a wider audience during the era.
