A detailed etching by Charles-François Daubigny capturing a flock of sheep in a rural enclosure at dawn.
Charles-François Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, produced this etching during a period when he sought to capture the quietude of the French countryside. The work, titled 'Parc à moutons, le matin', depicts a flock of sheep resting within a fenced enclosure at the break of day. Daubigny utilised the etching medium to explore the textures of the wool, the rough timber of the fence, and the expansive, atmospheric sky above the horizon.
The composition is defined by a low horizon line, which allows the sky to occupy a significant portion of the frame. A flock of birds is visible in the distance, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still scene. Daubigny was known for his direct observation of nature, often working from his studio boat, the Botin, to study the effects of light and weather on the rural environment. His approach to printmaking was technically precise, employing varied line weights to suggest the depth of the field and the soft forms of the animals.
This print reflects the artist's interest in the mundane aspects of agricultural life, stripped of romantic artifice. The focus remains on the interplay between the dark, dense forms of the sheep and the lighter, linear treatment of the sky. By avoiding excessive detail in the background, Daubigny directs the viewer's attention to the immediate presence of the flock. The work provides a clear example of the Barbizon School's preference for naturalistic representation and the honest depiction of the French rural experience during the mid-nineteenth century.
