A detailed seventeenth-century etching of the Pantheon in Rome, capturing the architectural grandeur of the ancient temple with historical annotations.
This etching depicts the Pantheon in Rome, a structure that has occupied a central position in the study of classical architecture for centuries. Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prominent Roman publisher and printmaker, produced this work as part of a broader documentation of the city's antiquities. The print captures the building from an elevated perspective, allowing for a clear view of the massive rotunda and the iconic portico.
The artist employs precise line work to define the architectural elements, from the Corinthian columns of the entrance to the stepped profile of the dome. Vegetation is visible along the upper cornices, reflecting the state of the monument during the seventeenth century. The surrounding urban environment is rendered with smaller figures and modest structures, providing a sense of scale to the massive Roman temple.
Below the image, the text provides a historical summary in Italian, identifying the structure as the temple built by Agrippa and noting its later transformation into the church of Santa Maria Rotonda. This inclusion of descriptive text is characteristic of the topographical prints produced by the de' Rossi firm, which functioned as a primary source of visual information for travellers and scholars on the Grand Tour. The composition balances technical accuracy with the aesthetic conventions of the period, offering a clear record of the Pantheon's appearance before later restorations. The print serves as a document of the intersection between classical heritage and the urban life of early modern Rome.
