Description

A detailed panoramic albumen print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting the architectural expansion of the Louvre palace in Paris during the 1850s.

This panoramic albumen silver print by Édouard Denis Baldus captures the architectural transformation of the Louvre in Paris during the mid-nineteenth century. Commissioned by the French government to document the expansion of the palace under Napoleon III, Baldus utilised large-format glass plate negatives to achieve exceptional clarity across the wide field of view. The composition presents the Cour Napoléon and the surrounding wings with precise geometric order, reflecting the grand scale of the Second Empire urban projects.

Baldus was a master of the technical challenges inherent in early architectural photography. He often combined multiple negatives to create seamless panoramic views, a method that allowed him to document expansive structures without the distortion common to wide-angle lenses of the period. The image displays the Triumphal Arch of the Carrousel in the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the massive facades of the palace. The lighting is soft and even, typical of the long exposures required by the wet collodion processes, which results in a stillness across the courtyard.

This work is part of a larger project documenting the 'Nouveau Louvre', a massive construction effort that connected the Louvre to the Tuileries Palace. The photograph serves as a record of the site before the destruction of the Tuileries during the Paris Commune in 1871. The print exhibits the characteristic warm, sepia-toned hues of the albumen process, which remains stable and clear over a century later. By focusing on the structural integrity and the interplay of light on stone surfaces, Baldus elevates the documentation of construction into a formal study of space and light. The clarity of the architectural details, from the ornate window frames to the rooflines, demonstrates the high level of technical proficiency that defined his career as a photographer of French national monuments.
