A dark, monochromatic abstract work by Cy Twombly, featuring scratched, graffiti-like lines that explore the intersection of drawing and writing.
Panorama, created in 1955, represents a period in Cy Twombly's career when he moved away from the gestural abstraction of his contemporaries. The work features a dark, monochromatic surface, which serves as a field for erratic, scratched lines. These marks, executed in wax crayon, resemble graffiti or primitive inscriptions. They do not form recognisable shapes or symbols, but rather suggest a rhythmic, physical engagement with the canvas.
Twombly's approach to the surface is tactile. He applied layers of dark paint, then incised the surface to reveal the lighter ground beneath. This technique creates a sense of depth, despite the overall flatness of the composition. The lines appear to drift across the dark field, lacking a central focus or traditional perspective. This lack of hierarchy is characteristic of his work from this decade, as he sought to strip away the conventions of representational painting.
The muted palette of dark greys and blacks emphasises the texture of the marks. The viewer's eye is drawn to the variations in line weight and density, which suggest a sense of urgency or spontaneity. By focusing on the act of marking, Twombly explores the relationship between writing and drawing. The work functions as a record of the artist's physical movement, capturing a moment of creation through repetitive, almost obsessive, gestures. This piece is an example of his early experimentation with the limits of abstraction, where the canvas becomes a site for traces of human activity rather than a window into a depicted world.
