An impressionist study by Andres de Santa Maria, capturing a rural field and stream with loose, expressive brushwork and a naturalistic colour palette.
Andres de Santa Maria, a central figure in the development of modern art in Colombia, spent significant periods of his career in Europe. This exposure to French Impressionism is evident in his approach to light and atmosphere. In this study, the artist employs a rapid, gestural application of paint to capture the fleeting qualities of a rural scene. The composition is anchored by a dark, silhouetted tree on the left, which provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the field and the distant, hazy mountains.
The palette relies on earthy ochres, muted browns, and cool blues, applied with a visible, textured brushstroke. Rather than focusing on precise detail, the work prioritises the sensation of light reflecting off the water and the shifting colours of the sky. The paint is applied with a degree of impasto, giving the surface a tactile quality that draws the viewer into the immediate environment. Santa Maria often experimented with these smaller, spontaneous studies to explore colour relationships before committing to larger canvases.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the subjective experience of nature. By reducing the scene to its essential components of light, colour, and form, he moves away from academic realism. The brushwork remains loose, allowing the viewer to perceive the individual marks that construct the image. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, as if the scene were captured in a single, fleeting moment. The work is a representative example of how Santa Maria integrated European stylistic developments into his own practice, resulting in a distinct visual language that bridges traditional subject matter with modern techniques.
