Pair of Ducks - Kawabata Gyokushō

Kawabata Gyokushō was a prominent figure in the Meiji period, known for his mastery of the Maruyama-Shijō school of painting. This work, executed in ink on silk, demonstrates the artist's ability to capture natural forms through minimal, controlled brushwork. The composition focuses on two ducks, rendered with varying ink washes that suggest texture and volume without the need for heavy outlines.

The artist employs the traditional kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) genre, which prioritises the observation of nature. Gyokushō studied under Nakajima Raishō and later became a teacher at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, where he influenced a generation of painters.
