A vintage photochrom print by William Henry Jackson depicting the geothermal Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the geothermal activity of the Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, utilised this technique to add colour to his original black and white negatives. The process involved creating multiple lithographic stones, each corresponding to a specific colour, which were then layered to produce the final print.
The composition focuses on the foreground, where the earth is cracked and parched, revealing the mineral-rich soil characteristic of the region. The mid-ground features the bubbling mud pools, which give the site its name. Beyond the geothermal features, a line of coniferous trees stretches across the horizon, leading the eye toward the distant, rolling hills. The sky is a clear, pale blue, providing a contrast to the warm, earthy tones of the terrain.
Jackson was instrumental in the documentation of the American frontier. His work provided many citizens with their first visual evidence of the geological wonders within Yellowstone. By the late nineteenth century, the photochrom process allowed for the mass production of these images, making them popular souvenirs for travellers and collectors. The print retains a sense of the rugged, untamed nature of the park during the late Victorian era. The texture of the dry, fractured ground is particularly clear, showing the harsh conditions of the geothermal basin. This print offers a view into the history of American photography and the early efforts to record the unique geography of the national park system.
