A 17th-century Mughal manuscript page featuring nasta'liq calligraphy, gold-leaf illumination, and a small gazelle illustration from the Panj Ganj.
This manuscript page originates from a copy of the Panj Ganj, or Five Treasures, written by the Persian poet Abd al-Rahman Jami. The work is attributed to the artist Mushfiq, who was active in the Indian Mughal court during the early 17th century. The page features two distinct Persian masnavis: Yusuf va Zulaykha and Subhat al-abrar.
The central text block is arranged in a classic multi-column format, typical of high-quality Mughal manuscript production. The calligraphy is executed in a precise nasta'liq script, which is known for its fluid, slanted appearance. The text is framed by gold-ruled borders, separating the primary verses from the marginal commentary.
A small, delicate illustration of a white gazelle is positioned within a triangular field on the right side of the page. This inclusion demonstrates the Mughal tradition of integrating small, naturalistic animal studies into literary manuscripts. The surrounding margins are decorated with gold-painted floral motifs, providing a decorative frame for the written content.
The paper itself shows the characteristic warm, aged tone of historical manuscripts. The combination of literary scholarship and artistic refinement reflects the cultural priorities of the Mughal era, where the production of books was a collaborative effort between calligraphers, painters, and illuminators. This print captures the precise line work and the subtle application of gold leaf, preserving the aesthetic balance of the original folio. It serves as an example of the synthesis between Persian literary traditions and the distinct visual language developed within the Indian subcontinent during the 17th century.
