Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties after the death of his wife. He worked primarily on discarded cardboard, often cutting the material into irregular shapes to suit his composition. His lack of formal training resulted in a unique visual language, characterised by a disregard for traditional perspective and a focus on the essential forms of maritime life.

In this depiction of a P&O steamship, Wallis employs a flattened spatial arrangement. The vessel sits atop a sea rendered in rhythmic, repetitive strokes of white and pale blue, suggesting the motion of waves without attempting realistic depth. The ship itself is painted with a directness that prioritises clarity of form over anatomical accuracy. The two funnels emit plumes of smoke that trail horizontally, adding a sense of movement to the static composition. The dark hull provides a stark contrast against the lighter tones of the water, ensuring the ship remains the primary focus of the viewer's attention.

Wallis painted from memory, drawing upon his years of experience at sea. His work was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, which brought his output to the attention of the wider London art world. Despite this recognition, he continued to paint in his home in St Ives, maintaining his idiosyncratic style until his death.
