A detailed 1670 etching by Adriaen van de Velde depicting an ox and sheep in a pastoral setting, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and naturalistic form.
This etching by Adriaen van de Velde, dated 1670, demonstrates the artist's technical precision in depicting livestock within a pastoral setting. Van de Velde was a member of a prominent family of Dutch painters and gained recognition for his ability to integrate animals into rural scenes with anatomical accuracy.
The composition features a central ox grazing in the foreground, rendered with fine, controlled lines that define the texture of its hide and the weight of its form. To the right, two sheep rest upon the ground, while a third animal is visible in the distance, providing a sense of spatial depth. The artist employs varied hatching techniques to suggest the uneven terrain and the soft wool of the sheep, creating a balanced interplay between light and shadow.
Van de Velde's work reflects the broader interest in the Dutch Golden Age for naturalistic observation of the countryside. Unlike his contemporaries who often focused on grand historical narratives, he found subject matter in the quiet, everyday life of the farm. The etching is signed and dated in the plate, a common practice for printmakers of the period to establish provenance and authorship. This print offers a clear view of the artist's approach to etching, where the economy of line is used to convey both the physical presence of the animals and the atmosphere of the open field. It remains a representative example of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, valued for its clarity and observational rigour.
