A detailed 1798 etching by Johann Christian Reinhart, depicting a recumbent ox and calf in a pastoral setting.
Johann Christian Reinhart, a German artist who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this etching in 1798. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium, utilising precise line work to define the physical form of the animals and the textures of the surrounding terrain. The composition features a recumbent ox, positioned in the foreground, with a smaller calf resting nearby.
Reinhart often turned his attention to the natural world, documenting animals with a focus on anatomical accuracy and observational detail. The background provides a subtle suggestion of a mountainous horizon, which adds a sense of place to the scene without distracting from the primary subjects. The etching process allows for a clarity of detail, particularly in the rendering of the ox's hide and the soft, recumbent posture of the calf.
This print reflects the broader interest in pastoral subjects that occupied many artists working in Italy during the late eighteenth century. Reinhart, who was associated with the circle of artists around Asmus Jacob Carstens, maintained a consistent approach to his graphic work, prioritising clarity and structural integrity. The work is signed and dated in the plate, indicating its origin in Rome. It remains a clear example of the period's dedication to observational drawing and the refinement of printmaking techniques. The monochromatic nature of the etching emphasises the play of light across the forms, creating a balanced visual experience that captures a quiet moment in a rural setting.
