A precise watercolour study of an owl perched on a snow-covered branch by British wildlife artist Charles Tunnicliffe.
Charles Tunnicliffe remains a figure of note in the tradition of British wildlife illustration. His approach to the natural world is defined by a rigorous attention to anatomical accuracy and a disciplined application of watercolour. This work depicts a small owl perched upon a gnarled, snow-dusted tree trunk. The composition focuses on the contrast between the soft, mottled plumage of the bird and the stark, bleached textures of the wood.
Tunnicliffe often utilised a precise, controlled technique, allowing the white of the paper to represent the snow, while building up the form of the owl through layered washes and fine brushwork. The background, a flat, cool-toned wash, serves to isolate the subject, drawing the viewer's eye to the alert posture and piercing gaze of the owl. His work is devoid of sentimentality, favouring a direct observation of the subject in its environment.
Born in Cheshire, Tunnicliffe spent much of his career documenting the birds of the British Isles. His illustrations appeared in numerous books and publications, including the famous Ladybird nature series. This particular piece demonstrates his ability to capture the stillness of a winter scene. The textures of the bark, rendered with sharp edges and deep shadows, provide a tactile quality that balances the delicate rendering of the owl's feathers. The work reflects his lifelong study of ornithology, combining scientific observation with a clear, graphic sensibility. It is a representative example of his mid-twentieth-century output, where the clarity of the image takes precedence over atmospheric abstraction.
