A 1776 aquatint by Paul Sandby depicting the stone arches of Overton Bridge over the River Dee in North Wales.
This aquatint by Paul Sandby depicts the stone arches of Overton Bridge spanning the River Dee. It forms part of the series titled Twelve Views in North Wales, published in 1776. Sandby, often described as the father of the English watercolour school, utilised the aquatint process to replicate the tonal qualities of his original wash drawings. The print captures the bridge as a central architectural feature, framed by dense foliage on the right bank and a winding road on the left.
In the foreground, figures on horseback and pedestrians traverse the path, providing a sense of scale and daily activity. The composition balances the solid geometry of the bridge with the fluid, reflective surface of the water. Sandby was instrumental in popularising the topographical view in Britain, catering to an audience interested in the picturesque qualities of the Welsh countryside. His work reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with travel and the documentation of regional geography.
Technically, the print demonstrates Sandby's mastery of tonal variation. By using different strengths of acid to etch the copper plate, he achieved a range of sepia tones that suggest depth and atmospheric perspective. The sky remains relatively clear, allowing the focus to rest upon the bridge and the surrounding terrain. This print serves as a record of the infrastructure and rural life in the borderlands of Denbighshire and Flintshire during the late eighteenth century. It remains a clear example of the topographical tradition that preceded the more romanticised interpretations of the Welsh landscape in the nineteenth century.
