A refined woodblock print by Watanabe Kazan featuring Otafuku, the traditional figure of mirth, holding a branch of cherry blossoms.
This woodblock print by Watanabe Kazan depicts Otafuku, a traditional Japanese figure associated with mirth and good fortune. The composition balances the rounded, expressive features of the subject with the delicate, stylised rendering of a cherry blossom branch. Kazan, a scholar and painter of the Edo period, brings a refined sensibility to this print, moving away from the more exaggerated caricatures often found in popular depictions of the character.
The subject is positioned against a dark, angular backdrop that provides a contrast to the pale tones of her face and the white petals of the blossoms. Her expression is one of gentle amusement, with her hand raised to her chin in a contemplative gesture. The kimono features a repeating geometric pattern, which adds a decorative element to the lower portion of the frame. The use of line is precise, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the fine details of the floral branch.
Kazan was known for his interest in Western techniques, such as shading and perspective, though this work remains firmly within the tradition of Japanese printmaking. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section of the print serves as a visual anchor, integrating text with the image in a manner common to the period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones and deep reds to maintain a sense of balance. This print offers a view into the cultural iconography of the 19th century, capturing a moment of quiet joy through the lens of a highly skilled artist.
