This woodblock print originates from the Oson Fuga, a collection of designs by the Edo-period master Sakai Hōitsu. As a prominent figure of the Rinpa school, Hōitsu revitalised the aesthetic traditions established by Ogata Kōrin, blending them with a refined, personal sensibility. The composition demonstrates the characteristic Rinpa focus on negative space and the careful arrangement of natural forms.

The image depicts a plum branch extending across two pages, a subject frequently explored in Japanese art for its association with the arrival of spring and resilience.
