Arshile Gorky, born Vostanik Manoug Adoyan, occupies a unique position in the development of American modernism. His work acts as a bridge between the European avant-garde traditions of Cubism and Surrealism and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Organization, painted during the mid-1930s, demonstrates his early engagement with the formal language of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.

The composition is defined by a series of biomorphic shapes that float against a stark, divided background. Gorky employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by areas of flat black and a singular, bright red form. The shapes possess a sculptural quality, suggesting organic entities or anatomical fragments, yet they remain resolutely non-representational.
