Richard Gerstl, an Austrian painter active in Vienna during the early twentieth century, produced this work towards the end of his brief career. Unlike the more structured compositions of his contemporaries, Gerstl favoured a direct, emotive application of paint. The surface of the canvas is dominated by varying shades of green, ranging from deep, shadowed tones in the foliage to lighter, yellowish hues on the ground. Gerstl is often associated with the early development of Expressionism in Austria. His approach to the canvas was unconventional for the period, prioritising the physical texture of the paint and the immediate sensation of the scene over traditional academic precision. The trees are suggested rather than defined, their forms emerging from the thick, rhythmic application of pigment.
