A striking Dadaist composition by Francis Picabia, featuring a reclining figure set against a hypnotic, concentric black and white target pattern.
Optophone I, created by Francis Picabia around 1921, represents a distinct moment in the artist's transition from the mechanical aesthetic of his earlier Dada works toward a more minimalist, graphic approach. The composition features a central, reclining female figure rendered in a warm, golden-ochre tone, superimposed against a stark, high-contrast background of concentric black and white circles. This geometric pattern creates a visual vibration, suggesting movement or an optical effect that aligns with the title, which references the optophone, a device designed to convert light into sound.
Picabia was a central figure in the Dada movement, known for his refusal to adhere to a single style or ideology. In this work, he strips away the complex machinery found in his earlier 'mechanomorphic' drawings, opting instead for a clean, almost clinical precision. The figure appears detached, floating within the hypnotic pull of the circular lines. The contrast between the organic form of the human body and the rigid, mathematical nature of the background creates a tension that is characteristic of Picabia's output during this period. The work reflects his interest in the intersection of human perception, technology, and the irrationality of the Dadaist spirit.
This piece is a fine example of early twentieth-century avant-garde graphic design. The simplicity of the line work and the bold use of negative space make it a compelling study in visual rhythm. By placing a classical, figurative element within a modern, abstract frame, Picabia invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the physical body and the technological environment. It is a work that avoids sentimentality, favouring a direct, intellectual engagement with the viewer's eye.
