A detailed 1635 engraving by Adriaen Possemiers depicting the submission of German princes to Emperor Charles V, captured with precise Baroque technique.
This etching and engraving by Adriaen Possemiers depicts a significant historical moment: the submission of rebellious German princes to Emperor Charles V. The composition is structured around the central, elevated figure of the Emperor, who sits in full regalia, holding the sceptre and orb. His posture conveys authority, reinforced by the presence of the imperial eagle behind his throne and putti hovering above, who offer a laurel wreath.
In the foreground, the defeated princes are shown kneeling on the steps, offering keys as a sign of surrender. To the right, armed guards stand in attendance, their presence providing a contrast to the submissive posture of the supplicants. The scene is framed by heavy drapery and architectural elements, which create a sense of theatricality common to the Baroque period. The Latin inscription at the base, 'AVSTRIACVM POPVLIS NOMEN FATALE REGENDIS', frames the narrative within the context of Habsburg power and the perceived inevitability of their rule.
Possemiers employs precise line work to define the textures of the armour, the folds of the garments, and the architectural details. The use of light and shadow is managed to draw the viewer's eye towards the Emperor, while the lower register remains slightly darker, emphasising the gravity of the act of submission. This print is part of a larger series documenting the entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Ghent in 1635, a major civic event that utilised elaborate temporary architecture and visual displays to reinforce political loyalty. The work functions as a visual record of historical propaganda, blending classical iconography with the specific political realities of the seventeenth-century Low Countries.
