John Everett Millais painted Ophelia between 1851 and 1852. The work depicts the tragic death of the character from William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Millais chose to represent the moment Ophelia drowns in a stream, surrounded by the flora described in the play. He painted the background on the banks of the Hogsmill River in Surrey, spending months observing the natural surroundings to achieve a high degree of botanical accuracy. The model for Ophelia was Elizabeth Siddal, who posed in a bathtub filled with water to capture the realistic effect of a dress floating in a river.

The composition reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in truth to nature and literary themes. Every element, from the willow branches to the individual wildflowers, is rendered with precise attention to detail. The flowers carry symbolic meanings: the poppies represent sleep and death, the pansies signify love in vain, and the violets denote faithfulness. The figure of Ophelia appears calm, her arms outstretched and her expression vacant, as she drifts among the reeds and blossoms.
