A 1969 lithograph by Edward Ruscha, featuring three cylindrical paper forms rendered in a minimalist, monochromatic style.
Edward Ruscha, born in 1937, is an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement and the conceptual art scene of Los Angeles. His work often examines the intersection of language, everyday objects, and the vernacular of American culture. Ooo, produced in 1969, is a lithograph that demonstrates his interest in the graphic potential of simple forms and the repetition of visual motifs.
The composition features three cylindrical paper forms arranged in a horizontal row, accompanied by a single, smaller curved fragment to the right. The objects are rendered in a monochromatic palette, utilising soft gradients to suggest volume and light against a dark, atmospheric background. The title, Ooo, functions as a phonetic or visual echo of the circular shapes depicted, a common strategy in Ruscha's practice where text and image share a symbiotic relationship.
Ruscha's approach to printmaking often involves a precise, detached aesthetic. By isolating these paper forms, he removes them from any specific narrative context, allowing the viewer to focus on the formal qualities of the shapes themselves. The work reflects a period in his career where he moved away from his earlier, more literal depictions of urban signage towards a more abstract investigation of objects. The lithographic process allows for the subtle tonal transitions seen in the shading of the cylinders, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the stark, graphic nature of the subjects. This print is a representative example of his ability to elevate mundane items into subjects of rigorous visual inquiry, maintaining a cool, objective distance that characterises much of his output from the late 1960s.
