An atmospheric charcoal and chalk study of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, captured by Hague School artist Johannes Bosboom in 1872.
Johannes Bosboom, a central figure of the Hague School, produced this atmospheric study of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp during his travels in 1872. Known primarily for his depictions of church interiors, Bosboom here turns his attention to the exterior facade, capturing the imposing Gothic structure through a series of rapid, gestural marks. The work demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, using the medium of charcoal to suggest the weight and texture of stone against the sky.
The composition focuses on the cathedral tower, which dominates the surrounding urban architecture. Bosboom employs a loose, expressive technique, allowing the charcoal to smudge and blur, which creates a sense of movement and transient light. The surrounding buildings are rendered with less detail, serving to frame the central spire and provide a sense of scale. The paper itself acts as a mid-tone, with white chalk highlights applied to suggest the way sunlight strikes the upper reaches of the masonry.
Unlike the precise architectural renderings common in the nineteenth century, this drawing prioritises mood and tonal balance. Bosboom was deeply interested in the way light interacted with historical structures, a theme he explored throughout his career. This sketch offers a glimpse into his working process, showing how he translated the physical reality of the Antwerp skyline into a personal, tonal interpretation. The work remains a fine example of the Hague School's preference for atmospheric effects and a restrained, earthy palette, reflecting the artist's ability to find beauty in the interplay of shadow and form.
