A design for an ornamental book printing stamp by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring bold, curving lines and a stylised flower or sunburst motif. The interplay of black and white creates a strong visual rhythm.
This striking design is by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944), a Dutch artist of Sephardic Jewish descent. De Mesquita is known for his graphic work, woodcuts, lithographs, and textile designs, often displaying a stylised, almost abstract approach to natural forms. He taught graphic techniques at the Academy for Visual Arts in Amsterdam; his pupils included M.C. Escher, who credited de Mesquita with teaching him the fundamentals of printmaking. Tragically, de Mesquita and his family were murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. This 'Ontwerp voor een ornamentale boekdrukstempel' (Design for an ornamental book printing stamp) features a symmetrical arrangement of bold, curving lines. The design suggests a stylised flower or sunburst motif. The interplay of black and white creates a strong visual rhythm. The design's clean lines and geometric shapes are characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement, which sought to integrate art into everyday life through decorative patterns and functional objects.
