Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a Japanese printmaker, regarded as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. His career spanned the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period, witnessing significant changes in Japanese society and art. Yoshitoshi is known for his innovative and often unsettling prints, which blend traditional techniques with modern themes. He produced a wide range of subjects, including historical events, ghost stories, and portraits of beautiful women. His work is characterised by its dramatic compositions, expressive figures, and masterful use of colour. 'Onogawa' is part of Yoshitoshi's series 'One Hundred Ghost Stories'. It depicts the sumo wrestler Onogawa Kisaburō encountering a malevolent spirit. The wrestler is shown seated, smoking a pipe, while a ghostly apparition looms behind him. The print is notable for its depiction of the supernatural, rendered with a blend of horror and humour. The composition is carefully balanced, with the wrestler's solid form contrasting with the ethereal quality of the ghost. The colours are muted, creating a sense of unease and mystery.
