A woodblock print from the Kōrin hyakuzu series by Sakai Hōitsu, featuring delicate ink illustrations in the traditional Rinpa style.
This woodblock print originates from the publication Kōrin hyakuzu, or One Hundred Paintings by Kōrin, compiled by the artist Sakai Hōitsu. Hōitsu was a central figure in the Edo period Rinpa school, and this project functioned as a tribute to the earlier master Ogata Kōrin. By documenting and reinterpreting the designs of his predecessor, Hōitsu helped to solidify the aesthetic identity of the Rinpa movement for future generations.
The composition displays a series of distinct vignettes, each contained within vertical rectangular frames. These panels feature a variety of subjects, including figures in traditional dress, botanical studies, and symbolic motifs. The line work is economical and precise, reflecting the calligraphic traditions of Japanese ink painting. Hōitsu employs a minimalist approach to space, allowing the white paper to function as an active element of the design rather than merely a background. The figures are rendered with fluid, expressive strokes, capturing character and movement through simple contours.
As a woodblock print, the work demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hōitsu. The clarity of the lines and the balance between the text and the imagery suggest a high level of craftsmanship. This print offers a glimpse into the pedagogical methods of the period, where students studied the works of past masters to refine their own practice. The inclusion of Japanese script alongside the illustrations provides context for the subjects, linking the visual elements to the literary and cultural traditions of the time. This piece is a representative example of the refined, decorative style that defines the Rinpa school, prioritising clarity of form and a harmonious arrangement of elements across the page.
