A portrait by French Impressionist Berthe Morisot, "On a Bench" depicts a woman seated in a garden, rendered with delicate brushwork and a soft, diffused light.
Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot's paintings are known for their delicate brushwork and light, airy atmosphere. She often depicted domestic scenes and portraits of women and children. In "On a Bench", a woman with long red hair sits on a blue bench, her hands clasped in her lap. She wears a large straw hat and a light-coloured dress. Behind her, a garden is suggested with loose brushstrokes, hinting at foliage and flowers. The painting is characterised by its soft, diffused light and the artist's use of broken colour, typical of Impressionist techniques. The composition is informal, capturing a fleeting moment of quiet contemplation.
