Morisot's paintings are known for their delicate brushwork and light, airy atmosphere. She often depicted domestic scenes and portraits of women and children. In "On a Bench", a woman with long red hair sits on a blue bench, her hands clasped in her lap. She wears a large straw hat and a light-coloured dress. Behind her, a garden is suggested with loose brushstrokes, hinting at foliage and flowers. The painting is characterised by its soft, diffused light and the artist's use of broken colour, typical of Impressionist techniques. The composition is informal, capturing a fleeting moment of quiet contemplation.
