A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series. It depicts a ferry crossing the Sumida River at twilight.
This woodblock print is part of Utagawa Hiroshige's final major series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Published in 1857, the print depicts the Ommayagashi, or Great Horse Stable Bank, located along the Sumida River. The composition focuses on a ferry boat in the lower left corner, carrying passengers across the water as evening approaches. Two women in the boat wear distinctive blue head coverings, known as zukin, which were typically worn by women of the pleasure quarters or domestic servants when travelling in public during the cooler months. Hiroshige employs a sophisticated use of colour gradation, a technique called bokashi, to represent the shifting light on the water and the darkening sky. The deep blue of the river transitions into a lighter teal near the shore, creating a sense of depth without relying on Western linear perspective. On the right bank, a large willow tree with drooping branches and a budding cherry tree frame the scene. The dark, silhouetted forms of the trees and the rocky shoreline provide a heavy visual anchor against the open expanse of the river. In the distance, several smaller boats are visible, including a raft steered by a single figure. These elements provide a sense of the daily activity on the Sumida River, which was a central artery for transport and commerce in Edo. The upper right corner contains two red cartouches. The larger one identifies the series title, while the smaller square cartouche provides the specific location. A third cartouche in the lower right contains the artist's signature. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige to produce the complex atmospheric effects that define his late style.
